Craftly

Craftly is a Shopify theme for shops that sell things people make things with, and things people make. Yarn and tools, kits and patterns, supplies and finished work.

It is built around one idea: in these shops, the facts are the sales pitch. A shopper choosing a yarn wants the shade, the weight, the yardage, the gauge and the dye lot, and every shop that sells one has been printing exactly that on a paper band around the skein for a century. Craftly puts that band on the website.

Three things come out of that:

  • The shade card shows your whole range as one field of color, edge to edge, every cell labeled with its name, its price and what is left. It is your home page's opening statement and it needs no app.
  • The band is the label under it, and under every product card, and across the footer. Fixed slots, ruled edges, the same object everywhere, so a grid of them lines up and reads as one table.
  • The spec is the ball band unrolled on the product page: term on the left, value on the right, filled from your product metafields so each product states its own facts.

There is also a product finder that turns a couple of questions into a filtered collection, and a product page built out of blocks you can rearrange.

What you need

Craftly works on any Shopify plan. Nothing in the theme requires an app.

Two features depend on settings you make in your Shopify admin rather than in the theme:

  • Filtering on collection and search pages comes from Shopify's own filters. Install the free Search & Discovery app and set your filters up there. Until you do, Craftly hides the filter panel rather than showing an empty one.
  • Complementary products on the product page come from the same app.

One more is worth doing before anything else, because more of the theme hangs off it than off any other setting: add color swatches to your product options. They become the fill of the shade card, the swatches on product cards, and the swatches in the filter panel. Product page has the steps.

Installing

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
  2. Under Theme library, choose Add theme → Upload zip file.
  3. Select the Craftly zip, then choose Upload file.
  4. Choose Customize to open the theme editor, or Publish to make it live.

The first hour

In this order, because each one makes the next easier to judge:

  1. Add your logo under Theme settings → Logo, and your favicon.
  2. Set your color schemes. Five ship, and every section picks one of them rather than carrying its own colors. Change a scheme and everywhere it is used changes with it.
  3. Point the shade card at a collection. Open the home page, select the Shade card section, and choose the collection that is your actual range. If your products have color swatches, leave Cell fill on Color swatch; if they do not, set it to Product image.
  4. Write the statement. One short heading under the field, saying what the field is.
  5. Fill in the spec. On the home page it is three or four facts about the shop. On the product page, connect the rows to metafields so each product states its own.
  6. Check a product page and a collection page on a phone before you publish anything.

Making it yours

Craftly's look lives in Theme settings, not in the sections. Colors, fonts, spacing, corner radius, shadows and card style are set once and every part of the shop follows.

Two places are worth knowing about before you start:

  • Colors holds the five schemes. The five that ship are checked for contrast; if you edit them, check the text still reads against its background.
  • Product cards decides how every product looks in every grid — the collection page, search, featured collections, related products. Set it once here instead of section by section.
